This one baffles the mind doesn’t it? Did He write the commandments? Did He draw a picture of a guillotine? Well, it baffles no more because the bible tells us.
This takes place in the story of the adulterous woman in John 8.
They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. (John 8:6)
Now let’s back up the previous day to John 7:37-38
In the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
And when you read on, you’ll see that they rejected Him.
Here’s where it gets interesting….
Yeshua was fulfilling a prophecy which He quoted from Jer 17:13 –
O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters. (KJV)
The day before, these leaders forsook Him, (the fountain of living waters).
They were ashamed.
They departed from Him spiritually and literally when asked if they ‘were without sin’ after they accused the adulterous woman.
And lastly, it was their names that were written in the ground.
I believe their conviction was two-fold.
- They knew that Yeshua knew that they were trying to trap Him. They knew they were not innocent.
- They also knew Torah and knew what the prophet Jeremiah wrote; and after seeing their names written in the earth, knew that they were a part of that fulfillment.
