What do we make of the following verses?
Is 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall the horn be blown in a city, and the people not tremble? Shall evil (rah) befall a city, and the Lord hath not done it?
Lam 3:38 Out of the mouth of the Most High proceedeth not evil (rah) and good?
These verses are incriminating aren’t they? They plainly state that He created darkness and evil yet we know there is no evil or darkness in Yahweh. So how do we reconcile the two? If we don’t take the time to understand this, all manner of error will take shape. So let’s go back to the beginning to find our answer.
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said “Let there be light”; and there was light.”
“Darkness” was already present. There was no light until Yahweh commanded it. You could say that darkness was the default.
So what does “darkness” mean:
Darkness = choshek (Strong’s 2822) = spirit of obscurity, falsehood, blindness, spirit of wickedness.
The luminaries were not create yet so while it was physically dark, choshek does not mean this. Choshek means falsehood, blindness etc.
Light = owr (Strong’s 216) = spirit of enlightenment, truth, goodness. Not actual light
So we have darkness which means obscurity, falsehood, blindness, wickedness etc. and light which means enlightenment, truth, goodness. So here we see that an opposite is established between darkness and light. The law of opposites was established by God from the beginning and is seen in physics and throughout our universe.
- If there is a positive, a negative must exist.
- If there is a far, there is a near.
- If there is an up, there is a down.
- If there is a front, there is a back.
- If there is life, there is death.
It is impossible for anything to exist in our universe that does not have an opposite. This is by Yahweh’s design.
So, in order for good to exist, then its opposite must also exist – evil. You cannot have one without the other because they are connected. Outside of our universe, like in heaven, these laws aren’t necessarily true. There is only good or light in heaven which is why when evil was found in Lucifer, he was expelled. And in the new earth, it will be the same with only good and no evil because these particular laws of opposites that govern our current universe will be gone.
So, how did evil come to exist?
Evil is the default and not manufactured by God. Evil is emptiness – without God. Evil is everything God does not command or instruct. If light is not produced and present, then darkness remains intact. Evil is the absence of good.
And so the same could be said with us. We are all born in darkness – children of wrath by nature (Eph 2:3) until we were given light. We were all born without God and blind until He gave us “eyes to see.” If we don’t exhibit fruits of the Spirit like love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal 5:22-23), all of which are “light” – “owr”, then we show that we are in darkness. We cannot acquire these things on our own even though works of the flesh are deceiving. These things must be given to us by God because we, like the earth at the beginning, are without these things and void.
