“On that Day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord! Didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we expel demons in your name? Didn’t we perform many miracles in your name?’ Then I will tell them to their faces, ‘I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness!’ Matt 7:22,23 (CJB)
On Judgement Day, many will be surprised and shaken to the core to hear such words. It’s every believer’s worst nightmare – to THINK that you’re living a life pleasing to YHVH only to find out that you have been deceived all of this time and that you were actually practicing lawlessness to boot!
We all claim that we know Him but does He know us? After all, His knowing us is all that really counts on Judgment Day. In the verses above, the person being judged is essentially saying that they know Him because they have prophesied and performed miracles in His name. Yet, He does not agree with that claim.
Think of a spouse or a best friend. If you truly know them, then you’ll know personal details, likes, dislikes etc. about that particular person. You know how your spouse takes their coffee or what their favorite food is etc. Only a person that doesn’t know you would make your coffee in a different way and serve you food that you detest. With this in mind, let me ask you a personal question…..
Has YHVH ever given you any indication that He truly knows you? You might think that answered prayer is a good indication and it can be. However, He causes the sun to rise on the evil and good; and sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous. (Matt 5:45) So He may have answered a prayer due to His goodness and not necessarily because you have found favor in Him. You want to be sure. I’m talking about something personal, just for you. Something that no one else would benefit from because it was specifically for you and may even be something that no one else knows. Has YHVH ever revealed to you in some small way that He knows you intimately? This is what we should be asking ourselves, ‘Does He know me?’
I asked myself this same question and besides all of the answered prayers and spiritual indicators, I was looking for something tailor made just for me. Something to show that He knows me intimately and I’d like to share one particular story briefly…..
A few years ago, I had a job where I would gather data from various courthouses and enter it into a computer. This job required a lot of travel – sometimes three or more hours to get to a particular courthouse then three plus hours back. Bathrooms and restaurants were scarce. So if I was hungry, I was stuck until I got home. And if I had to use the facilities, then I was still stuck and racing home. Not fun.
One day I was at a courthouse that was the farthest away – over three hours. I had been there many times before and I usually made sure that I ate something before I left but this one day I didn’t. I drove the three plus hours there, did my work for the day (which was most of the day) and I had to drive back and I was so hungry. There were no restaurants around this particular courthouse that I could walk to and I couldn’t drive anywhere because parking was always scarce and so I was sure to lose my space if I left so I didn’t eat lunch that day.
Have you ever been so hungry that you became nauseous? Well that was me. I was physically sick and so desperate that I was willing to go to a fast food place which I hate. So I was driving on the way back home looking for a fast food place that I might have missed, dreading the thought of eating there but I just wanted the pain and nausea to stop. All the while I was wishing, dreaming, fantasizing that I would absolutely LOVE to have some good Mexican food and how that would really hit the spot. I didn’t dare dwell on this too long because I didn’t want to torture myself so I kept looking for a fast food place. Just then…..
I’m on the same road I’ve driven many times before and suddenly I see a restaurant called “Pedro’s!” It was a Mexican restaurant!!! I had NEVER seen this restaurant before and it suddenly appeared!! I stopped my car, backed up, and turned in and feasted! I was in awe of Yah’s provision and I didn’t even pray about it. Many thoughts came to mind including that He does His own mitzvah because He fed me when I was hungry. He gave me what I desired most which was Mexican and He didn’t have to do that. What He did for me, again spiritual things aside – just looking for tangible evidence – showed me that He knows me. There are many other things I can say on this but hopefully you understand what I’m saying. He showed that He knows me because He knew what was on my heart and He knew this little fact that Mexican is my favorite food! Just amazing!
So does Abba know you? Has He done something to show you that He knows something personal about you? I’m not saying that this is the litmus test to see if He knows you. I’m just saying that it’s a really good indicator, much like a close friend or a spouse, that He knows you and is acquainted with your ways.
