We all know the account of the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden. Seems pretty cut and dry right? Sure it is but there’s more….
What if I were to tell you that there is a picture of salvation, a foreshadowing, surrounding this event? Hang with me for a minute and I’ll show you.
Here’s the breakdown:
Eve eats the fruit (Gen 3:6)
Adam eats it (Gen 3:7)
They both realized they were naked and sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves (Gen 3:7)
God calls “Where are you?” (Gen 3:11)
God made garments of skin for them (Gen 3:21)
After Adam and Eve sinned, they felt the natural consequences of that sin which is shame and guilt. They tried by their own works to cover their nakedness (and shame and guilt) with fig leaves but it was insufficient. But God, wanting to truly cover their nakedness (shame and guilt) sacrificed an innocent animal as a substitute to provide a covering. Do you see it? What Adam and Eve did was an example of salvation by works (trying to cover their shame themselves) versus salvation by trusting in God’s provision for our sins (covering using an innocent substitute).
Isn’t this the perfect picture of our predicament and Yeshua’s (Jesus) substitutionary sacrifice for us? His blood is the only sufficient covering for our sins. I’ve never heard this preached from the pulpit!
One more thing to note: remember when God said “where are you?” This is a picture, of Him searching for His sheep as stated in Luke 15. And isn’t it typical that we sheep run away from God sometimes!
“I am God, and there is none like me. Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done…” Is 46:10
